Wrestle Mania!

Behold the painting that started it all. (Well, at least the wrestling turtles.) This is the art that Murph and I thought was too important to be left buried in Pete's studio
and should be seen, which is why we wound up using the designs for the Intergalactic Wrestling TMNT in the Archie series!

Historically, though, these are the costumes Pete and Kev designed for the turtles before they decided to garb them in their familiar
red bandanas, and elbow and knee pads.

The painting is 20" by 30" . Sorry for the bad picture. Didn't want to take it out of the frame. Lazy.

I think these should be a part of the official Mirage canon.

So here's the question...

Should these costumes be canon to the Mirage Universe ?

Oh dude, that's awesome!!!

And speaking of those costumes, check this out. It's been up for less than a day and the price is already super-high. Too bad there's no way I'll be able to afford it come closing time.

So pretty...

I encourage everyone to check out the auction! It's unpublished, but a real piece of history. Thanks to Rose for spotting it and bringing it to our attention.
It's not everyday you are going to find one piece of TMNT art that both Pete and Kevin worked on together. Other than early pages and a few covers, the Archie Adventure series comes to mind, there just isn't that many out there.

Hey guys, you didn't answer the question...

Should these costumes be canon to the Mirage Universe ? Or are they already, since they existed before the Archie Adventure series?

...pay attention!

As a huge fan of the Archies, I can't help but think of them as canon.... It might throw me off if they suddenly started wearing them in the Mirage universe, but only for about a second, and then it would be way cool! I was actually really shocked to learn a while back that they weren't invented especially for the Archie wrestling thing.

To me, they are canon without a doubt. The fact that Kev and Pete wanted to originally use them as the "real" costumes only further supports their importance. There's a specific history to these costumes, regardless of which comic they appeared in, and I'm certain any turtle fan has a soft spot for seeing the gang clad in them. Cudley... maybe not so much. But these costumes, definitely.

Plus, very few things are as badass as seeing Raph in all black.

Hahahaha, Cudley in the Mirageverse? :) Nice, Tokka!

I don't know from Archie-- but I like this look, and I see no reason why it can't be canon.

*gazes at piccie*

That is some painting.

I'd have a hard time seeing the costumes in Mirage not only because of their association with Archie, but specifically their association with Intergalactic Wrestling. I'd keep looking for Stump and Sling!

And Cudley! But Cudley should be in every 'verse!

A one issue thing where the turtles try these costumes on

and then decide not to wear them

and then hang them back in the closet.

Priceless.

Rachel said...

Wait, wait, when does that happen? The trying-on of the costumes? That's something I want to see!

I would *love * to see that. Also read the dialog as they discuss the pros and cons-- that could be pretty darn funny if someone wanted to spin it for the humor.

Especially that one Don's clothed in....

Raph: *snerks*

Don: What?

Raph: *tries to hold laugh* Nothin'... *SNERK*

Don: *growing angry* WHAT???

Raph: ... .... ...... *SNERK* .... BWA-hahahaha! Ya' look like yer wearin' a skirt!

Don: *grows angry* It's NOT a skirt!

Raph: Yeah, an' it's not a STICK, either! *falls on floor laughing; gets ass kicked by "stick"-wielding, skirt-wearing Donatello....

I have to disagree with you on this one, Ryman. I believe these were costumes that we toyed with later on, well after the comic book series had started. For whatever reason, we decided to keep the original designs. (Probably we didn't want to spend the extra time drawing all those different costumes.) -- Peter Laird

Just discovered this today. Very cool trivia!

If there were ever a TMNT Adventures Bible of sorts, items like this should be included.
