Think about it, it was really Donatello that saved the day. Without him the turtles would have never made it past issue #1. Donatello should be everyone's favorite TMNT.
Don's the smart one! He was wasted in the first movie! And then come the second movie, he had a lousy voice and it almost ruined it! Oh, Corey Feldman, couldn't you settle down for just a couple years?
I think on the old cartoon, Donatello was almost the "head turtle," moreso than Leonardo. Plus his weapon was the strongest in the first TMNT Nintendo Game. So he was my favorite.
Don can do it all! He's got the brains, so he can build the equipment (and some can argue that he can also lead because of his smarts), he can kick butt with all the training, and has one of the coolest weapons around!!!!

He also proved he has the most deadliest weapon for a smart guy ;)
He's my fave for sure with Raph in second.
I know I never would have made it past the first Ninja Turtles video game on NES if Donatello and his Bo weren't around to kick butt!
The more I watch the old toon, the more I realize that it was Don who really kept the Turtles going. Leonardo may lead, but it's Don who wins the day!
